Shimla: What began more than three decades ago as an ambitious hydropower venture on the Sutlej River in Himachal Pradesh has today evolved into one of India’s most significant public sector energy companies. Established on May 24, 1988, as a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh, SJVN Limited has grown from developing a single hydropower project into a diversified energy enterprise with a strong national and international presence.

A Vision That Took Shape

SJVN was established with the sole objective of executing the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Project, one of India’s most ambitious hydropower ventures at the time. The project faced formidable challenges, including the fragile Himalayan terrain, complex tunnelling, frequent landslides, heavy silt in the Sutlej River and financial constraints. Through engineering excellence, technological innovation and the dedication of its workforce, these challenges were successfully overcome.

Nathpa Jhakri: The Project That Defined SJVN

The commissioning of the Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Project in 2004 marked a turning point in SJVN’s journey. Besides significantly strengthening power supply across northern India, the project established the company as a symbol of technical excellence in the hydropower sector. Its success paved the way for major developments, including the Rampur Hydroelectric Project and several other power initiatives.

Beyond Hydropower

Over the years, SJVN transformed itself from a hydropower-focused utility into a diversified energy company. Today, its portfolio includes hydropower, solar, wind and thermal energy, along with power transmission projects. The company has expanded its footprint across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh and several other states, while also undertaking projects in Nepal and other international locations.

Leaders Who Shaped the Company’s Growth

The success of SJVN reflects the contributions of thousands of employees, supported by visionary leadership over the years.

Former Chairman and Managing Director Nand Lal Sharma is widely credited with steering the company’s most transformative phase between 2017 and 2024. Under his leadership, SJVN accelerated its expansion, diversified into renewable energy and significantly increased its project portfolio while setting ambitious long-term capacity targets.

Sushil Sharma also played a crucial role in project execution and technical operations, making significant contributions to the construction and successful operation of the Nathpa Jhakri and other major projects.

Currently, under the leadership of Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta, SJVN is focusing on green energy, new infrastructure projects and international expansion. The leadership team also includes Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Finance) Parthajit Dey, and Director (Projects) Rajesh Kumar Chandel, who continue to drive the company’s growth strategy.

Throughout its journey, SJVN has faced numerous obstacles, including rising silt levels in the Sutlej River, natural disasters, environmental clearances, escalating project costs and difficult terrain.
