Shimla, August 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party, Himachal Pradesh, today organized a massive protest demonstration in Shimla against the Congress government’s politics of vendetta, corruption, anti-people decisions, deteriorating law and order, and misuse of democratic institutions. The programme was led by Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, while it was presided over by BJP State President Dr. Rajeev Bindal. Thousands of BJP workers, public representatives, office-bearers and supporters from across the state participated in the protest.
Following the public meeting, BJP workers marched peacefully in a rally up to Sher-e-Punjab and then laid siege to the Chief Minister’s official residence, Oakover. During the protest, slogans were raised against the Congress government, the Chief Minister and his ministers over corruption, politics of revenge, anti-people policies and the alleged murder of democracy. Hundreds of workers staged a sit-in outside the Chief Minister’s residence and demanded the dismissal of the state government.
Addressing the gathering, Jairam Thakur said that the Congress government had started locking down development works and welfare schemes immediately after coming to power. Even after nearly four years in office, the government continues to follow the politics of closure and disruption. He alleged that the government tried every possible means to delay Panchayat and Urban Local Body elections because it knew that the people would reject it decisively. BJP fought the battle for democracy from the High Court to the Supreme Court, ensuring that elections were held, resulting in a historic mandate against the Congress government.
He stated that District Council elections were held in 10 of the state’s 12 districts, where the Congress could not even field candidates in nine districts. In Municipal Corporation elections, BJP secured an overwhelming victory in three out of four corporations. According to him, this is a clear message that the people of Himachal Pradesh want the Congress government out of power.
Jairam Thakur accused the Congress government of misusing the administration to register false criminal cases against BJP leaders and workers after its electoral defeat. He alleged that officers were being pressured to file FIRs even in cases where they admitted that no legal case existed, solely to target political opponents.
He claimed that false cases had been registered against BJP State President Dr. Rajeev Bindal, MLAs Sudhir Sharma and Ashish Sharma, Hoshiar Singh, Rajendra Rana and several other BJP leaders and even their family members. He further alleged that the government has now started targeting newly elected District Council members, councillors and BJP-supported Panchayat representatives, calling it an unprecedented assault on democracy.
Thakur further alleged that freedom of expression is under threat in the state, claiming that journalists publishing reports critical of the government and citizens expressing dissent on social media are being subjected to action.
He said that while BJP would raise all these issues during the upcoming Assembly session beginning on August 21, the party had decided to begin its public movement on the streets beforehand. He warned that if the government failed to change its style of functioning, BJP’s mass agitation would intensify and the people would eventually remove the Congress government from power.
Referring to developments within the Congress, Thakur claimed that even Congress leaders were unhappy with the functioning of the government and that feedback had reached the party high command suggesting serious political consequences if the Chief Minister did not change his approach.
Expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation, he referred to incidents of murder in Shimla and the Bilaspur axe murder case, alleging that criminals were becoming increasingly emboldened in the state.
He also cautioned government officials against acting under political pressure to harass the opposition, stating that any officer found misusing authority for political purposes would be held accountable in accordance with the law if BJP returns to power.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Rajeev Bindal declared that the day’s protest marked only the beginning of a sustained statewide movement. He announced that BJP would organize protests every month in every Assembly constituency and every Mandal against the anti-people policies of the Congress government.
He said the Congress had promised ₹1,500 per month to women, but even after four years, lakhs of women continue to wait. Promises of permanent government jobs and restoration of the old pension system remained unfulfilled, while schools, colleges, hospitals and public institutions had been shut down.
Dr. Bindal said several welfare schemes launched during the Jairam Thakur government for the benefit of poor families had been discontinued. He alleged that employees, pensioners, outsourced workers, daily wagers, farmers, women, youth and senior citizens had all been neglected by the present government.
Describing the Congress government as a “government of closures, mafia, corruption, nepotism and anti-women, anti-farmer and anti-youth policies,” he said BJP workers would now reach every village and every household to expose the failures of the government.
He further alleged that the state government had increased the financial burden on the people by raising the prices of electricity, diesel, cement and other essential commodities, pushing Himachal Pradesh into a deep crisis instead of accelerating development.
Calling upon party workers to intensify public outreach, Dr. Bindal said BJP would take its campaign to every booth, Panchayat, Mandal and Assembly constituency and continue the struggle until the anti-people Congress government is voted out of power.
The protest concluded with thousands of BJP leaders and workers taking a collective pledge to continue their fight against corruption, protect democratic values and intensify the movement against the anti-people policies of the Congress government until its removal from office.
