Hamirpur/New Delhi, August 25, 2026: Former Union Minister and Member of Parliament Anurag Singh Thakur today congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 10th anniversary of the launch of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), describing India’s digital payments journey over the past decade as one of the most remarkable fintech transformations in the world.
Anurag Singh Thakur said that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, what began a decade ago as a homegrown digital payment innovation has evolved into a powerful and globally recognised financial technology platform. UPI has not only transformed the way Indians make payments but has also strengthened India’s position as a technologically advanced and innovation-driven nation.
Highlighting the unprecedented scale of UPI’s growth, Anurag Thakur said that transaction volumes have risen from just 1.78 crore transactions in the financial year 2016-17 to an astounding 24,162 crore transactions in 2025-26. During the same period, the total value of UPI transactions has surged from approximately ₹7,000 crore to nearly ₹314 lakh crore.
He said that these extraordinary figures reflect the deep integration of digital payments into the everyday lives of Indian citizens, businesses and institutions. The widespread adoption of UPI is a testimony to the trust, convenience, speed and accessibility that India’s digital payment ecosystem has delivered to people across the country.
Anurag Thakur further highlighted that the success of UPI has now transcended India’s borders. The indigenous digital payment innovation is currently operational in 11 countries, showcasing the scalability, robustness and global potential of India’s digital public infrastructure.
He said that the growing international adoption of UPI is a matter of pride for every Indian and demonstrates how India, through innovation and technology, is emerging as a global leader in the fintech sector. UPI has become a powerful symbol of Digital India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat and India’s technological capabilities, while setting new benchmarks for digital payments across the world.
