Himachal’s history, economy, dialects, politics and cuisine to be included in classes 6 to 8 curriculum: Rohit Thakur

Education Minister Rohit Thakur today chaired a meeting to deliberate on the revision of textbooks for Classes six to eight. The meeting held detailed discussions on incorporating key aspects of Himachal Pradesh’s geography, society, history, folk culture, economy and political system into the curriculum for students of classes six, seven and eight.

The Education Minister said that the revised textbooks would include engaging and informative content on Himachal Pradesh’s journey from the prehistoric era to the formation of the state. The curriculum would also cover the State’s dialects, traditional cuisine, freedom fighters, Kargil heroes, soldiers, contemporary challenges, economy, political system and other significant aspects of Himachal’s rich heritage and identity.

He informed that the content and factual material would be finalized within one month to facilitate the early publication of the revised textbooks. These books will be introduced in schools from the academic session 2027–28.

Rohit Thakur said that introducing students to authentic information and facts about Himachal Pradesh would foster analytical thinking, deepen their understanding of the State’s history and culture, and stimulate curiosity for further learning. He added that the revised curriculum would also prove beneficial for students preparing for future competitive examinations.

The Education Minister further stated that a committee has been constituted under his chairmanship to review and improve the curriculum for Classes six, seven and eight. The committee has been holding regular meetings to ensure the timely preparation and implementation of the revised textbooks. The committee comprises the Secretary Education, representatives of the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and Assistant Professors, among others.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Education Rakesh Kanwar, Secretary, State Project Director, Samagra Shiksha, Rajesh Sharma, Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education, Ankush Sharma, Director of Higher Education Suneeta Singh, Principal, SCERT, Dr. Ritu Sharma Soni and other senior officers.
