Jogindernagar, September 21: A 66-year-old retired Naib Subedar from Jogindernagar was allegedly duped of ₹6 lakh by cyber fraudsters who kept him under a “digital arrest” for nearly three days, posing as officials of the Mumbai Crime Branch and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
The victim, Bhimsen, a resident of Ghamrehad, reportedly received calls from unknown numbers. The callers accused him of involvement in an alleged fraud and threatened him with arrest. They then allegedly kept him under constant surveillance and instructed him to share his whereabouts through WhatsApp every two hours.
Using the names of the Crime Branch and RBI, the fraudsters allegedly pressured him into transferring money to an account specified by them. Fearing arrest, Bhimsen deposited ₹6 lakh through a cheque into an account in the name of a person identified as Abhay Yadav.
The fraudsters allegedly continued to demand documents related to his land and other personal assets. It was then that Bhimsen became suspicious and approached the Jogindernagar police station, where he lodged a complaint.
Jogindernagar SHO Ranjit Singh said a case had been registered on the basis of the complaint. Police are investigating the alleged fraudsters and the bank account into which the money was deposited.
