Shimla, August 26, 2026: Students from Auckland House School, Shimla, and the Department of Sociology, Himachal Pradesh University, visited the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday to witness the proceedings of the House.

Before observing the proceedings, the students met Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania outside the Council Chamber. During the interaction, the students asked several questions regarding the parliamentary system, constitutional framework, importance of the office of the Speaker, the Speaker’s role in conducting the proceedings of the House, and the powers of the Council of Ministers. Speaker Pathania responded to their questions in detail.

Speaking on the occasion, Pathania said it was encouraging to see young people and students showing interest in understanding the parliamentary system and procedures by visiting the Assembly and witnessing its proceedings. He said this interest among the younger generation reflects the strength of Indian democracy and gives confidence that its future is bright.

Pathania said that the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies are the biggest temples of democracy, where the direction and future of the country and the states are determined. He explained that the Constitution gives Parliament and State Legislatures the authority to make laws. Members of the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies are directly elected by the people, while members of the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Councils are elected indirectly.

He said that Himachal Pradesh has 68 MLAs, four Lok Sabha members and three Rajya Sabha members. Pathania told the students that today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders and that the responsibility of the country and the state will eventually rest on their shoulders.

He also urged the students to always remember the sacrifices of the freedom fighters. He said that the freedom enjoyed today, the right to speak for one’s rights and the Constitution are the result of the sacrifices and martyrdom of those who fought for the country’s independence.

On the occasion, Speaker Pathania also briefed the students about the proceedings scheduled in the House and invited them to witness the functioning of the Legislative Assembly.
