Shimla, August 6: BJP Senior Spokesperson Rajinder Rana, while addressing a press conference in Shimla today, launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the Congress government, alleging that for the first time in Himachal Pradesh’s history, a Chief Minister has earned five such “titles” for which he will be remembered by the people of the state.
Rana said that the Chief Minister has been recognised as the richest Chief Minister in North India, has set the record for borrowing the highest amount of debt in the state’s history, is accused of allowing his friends and favourites a free hand in loot and corruption, has earned the reputation of being the biggest liar, and has also established a record for registering the highest number of false cases against political opponents out of political vendetta.
Rajinder Rana alleged that Himachal Pradesh is no longer being governed by a democratic government but by a “syndicate of favourites.” He claimed that a group of individuals with neither constitutional authority nor administrative responsibility has taken control of governance from behind the scenes. According to him, from key decisions in the Secretariat to appointments across departments, the influence of this syndicate is visible everywhere. He further alleged that taxpayers’ money is being spent not on development but on maintaining dozens of OSDs, advisors, media advisors, and politically appointed individuals.
He said that during the tenures of former Chief Ministers Dr. Y.S. Parmar, Shanta Kumar, Prem Kumar Dhumal, Virbhadra Singh, and Jairam Thakur, political appointments were limited. In contrast, the present government has appointed a record number of advisors and OSDs, placing an unnecessary burden on the state exchequer merely to provide political patronage.
Launching a direct attack on the government’s financial management, Rana said that while Himachal Pradesh took several decades after attaining statehood to accumulate its earlier debt, the present government has borrowed a record amount within a single term, pushing the state towards a severe financial crisis. He alleged that the government is borrowing fresh loans merely to repay previous ones, while development is absent on the ground. Despite receiving thousands of crores from the Central Government for National Highways, disaster relief, and development projects, roads remain in poor condition, bridges are damaged, and people in rural areas continue to struggle for basic connectivity.
Rana further alleged that Himachal Pradesh is witnessing deterioration in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and tourism. HRTC is facing an unprecedented financial crisis, several bus routes have been discontinued, and there are reports of shortages of diesel and spare parts. Employees are facing delays in financial benefits and pensioners continue to suffer, while the government limits itself to announcements instead of delivering results.
The BJP leader also accused the government of preparing to hand over profitable public assets to private interests. He alleged that revenue-generating hotels of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, as well as important government properties such as Himachal Niketan in New Delhi, are being readied for privatisation. If the government’s intentions are transparent, he asked, why are these decisions not being placed before the public?
Rajinder Rana alleged that the Chief Minister is using the police and administration as political tools to suppress the Opposition. He claimed that BJP leaders, elected representatives, and party workers are being targeted through false criminal cases in an attempt to divert public attention from the government’s failures. He warned that governments are not permanent and that officials misusing the law under political pressure would eventually be held accountable.
Responding to allegations made against him by the Chief Minister, Rana said that if the government possesses any evidence regarding its accusations, it should present the same before the court. He stated that every aspect of his financial and personal life had been scrutinised, yet not a single allegation had been substantiated. This, he said, clearly demonstrates that the government is attempting to malign political opponents through false accusations motivated by political vendetta.
Rana asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party remains completely united and functions under one symbol and one ideology—the Lotus. Every BJP worker, he said, is working in accordance with the directions of the party’s national and state leadership. In contrast, he alleged that serious allegations are being levelled against the Chief Minister from within the Congress itself, exposing growing internal dissatisfaction.
He further stated that the verdict delivered by the people in the Panchayat, Municipal, and Zila Parishad elections was a clear warning to the Congress government. According to him, those elections were merely a trailer, while the Assembly elections of 2027 would deliver the final verdict. Women, employees, youth, farmers, orchardists, traders, and ordinary citizens, he claimed, have become deeply disappointed with the Congress government’s unfulfilled promises, financial mismanagement, rising debt, administrative failures, and politics of vendetta. He expressed confidence that the people would democratically vote the Congress government out of power.
Concluding his remarks, Rajinder Rana said that instead of registering politically motivated cases against opponents, the Chief Minister should focus on addressing the state’s deteriorating economy, unemployment, poor road infrastructure, employees’ grievances, the decline of the tourism sector, and the promises made to the people. He said the people of Himachal Pradesh are watching everything carefully and will give a fitting democratic response at the appropriate time.
