What Compelled the Chief Minister to Stage a Protest Outside Raj Bhavan at 8 PM? Asks Balbir Verma

Shimla: BJP Himachal Pradesh State Vice President Balbir Verma strongly criticised Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for staging a late-evening protest outside Raj Bhavan, stating that it was unprecedented in the history of Himachal Pradesh for a sitting Chief Minister to question the constitutional system by sitting on a protest outside the Governor’s residence.

He said that the dignity of the Chief Minister’s office demands governance, not street protests. According to Verma, if the Chief Minister himself has to resort to demonstrations, it reflects the complete failure of his own administration.

Balbir Verma alleged that over the past two and a half years, the Congress government has failed to address the state’s economic crisis, unemployment, deteriorating law and order, pending dues of government employees, concerns of farmers and orchardists, and overall developmental challenges. Instead of addressing these pressing issues, the government was now attempting to divert public attention through political theatrics.

Questioning the Chief Minister’s priorities, Verma asked what extraordinary circumstances forced him to stage a protest outside Raj Bhavan late in the evening. He alleged that the entire state Cabinet appeared more interested in advancing the political agenda of the Gandhi family than serving the people of Himachal Pradesh. By openly supporting Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, he claimed, the Chief Minister had made it clear that his first priority was the Congress high command rather than the people of the state.

He further questioned the Congress government over its unfulfilled election promises, asking what had happened to the promise of ₹1,500 per month for eligible women, five lakh jobs, and 300 units of free electricity, besides raising concerns over unresolved issues relating to employees, pensioners, farmers and orchardists.

Balbir Verma alleged that the Chief Minister had aligned himself with political campaigns that were creating unrest in different parts of the country. He asserted that the Chief Minister’s foremost responsibility was towards the nearly 7.5 million people of Himachal Pradesh, not towards any single political family.

He further alleged that the Congress party was deliberately creating an atmosphere of political confrontation and confusion, and that the Raj Bhavan protest was part of that strategy. He maintained that Raj Bhavan is a constitutional institution deserving respect and should not be turned into a venue for political pressure tactics.

Verma also alleged that the Congress government had become directionless, with issues such as development, investment, employment, roads, healthcare and education taking a back seat while the government remained preoccupied with the political interests of the Gandhi family.

Concluding his statement, Balbir Verma said that the Bharatiya Janata Party has always stood firmly for democratic values, constitutional institutions and national interest. He urged the Chief Minister to abandon political theatrics and focus instead on governance and fulfilling the promises made to the people of Himachal Pradesh, adding that the people of the state would deliver their verdict through democratic means at the appropriate time.
